doodle part 3

so...while i am preparing for doodle's party; let me finish his birth story-just so i don't leave anyone in suspense.  (if you'd like to catch up with previous posts, do so here and here)

on saturday may 1st hubs, kman and i just hung out most of the day.  nothing overally exciting-the landscapers were coming the next week so i recall maybe having to do a few things to get ready for that?  honestly, i didn't even take a shower that day (a decison i still regret, ugh!) and we ended up going to eat dinner at "five guys".  i am pretty sure for whatever reason we went later than normal; because kman went to bed after we got home.  i recall putting him to bed and re-reading the story "waiting for baby" which we'd done almost every night in prepartion.  we also had been reminding him at random times that when it was time for mommy and daddy to go to the hospital to "get" the baby that he would be staying at grandma m's house.

after i put kman to bed; i came down to the kitchen and started cleaning...i decided this would be the best time to scrub the stove and clean the burners (WHAT? its like 9pm or later).  hubs told me this was not the time to be doing this and i needed to get to sleep.  ok...i left the burners to dry by the sink and hit the hay.

around 1:30am i was woken up by this extremely wierd sensation, i can only describe that it felt like i had been kicked-there was like a pop of sorts and i remember almost screaming outloud half asleep.  of course no one heard me, so it probably wasn't that loud.  i almost didn't even want to move, but i got up and went to the bathroom-i was feeling a bit crampy; but nothing that required timing or breathing techniques.  i sat on the toilet and noticed some blood and just felt wierd.  if you know me, you know that hubs had begun sleeping in our guest room probably half way through my pregnancy-it was much more comfortable for both of us!
our guest room is on the otherside of the wall from our masterbath and at that time the bed and hubs head were just on the other side (some nights i could hear him snoring through the wall).

anywho...i started tapping on the wall.  i did it a few times (still sitting on the toilet) and then stopped.  he didn't come and i just sat on the toilet for a bit longer (because i just felt wierd, remember).  he could have come 5 minutes, 1 minute or 20 minutes later-i really don't remember-but eventually he made his way into the bathroom with a disgusted look on his face and asked "what are you doing?"  i didn't really have an explanation at this point but all i could say was "i think something might be going on"  he honestly, almost went back to bed.  once i got off the toilet the cramping started a bit more (i didn't "go into" labor with kman on my own and never had contractions that weren't induced-so i had no idea if i was having contractions or not).

at some point i started "timing" the cramping on hubs' phone (he had download an app for that! ha-ha) and there was no rhyme or reason and almost made me feel as though i was a little unsure that this might or might not be happening and THEN my water broke.  THEN....i knew we had something going here and THEN the contractions started.  i put a call into the answering service for my doctors office (the same mid-wife that delivered kman happened to be on call) she called me back right away and said since "it's your second baby, your water has broke, and the contractions are close together-ummmm....get your hiney to the hospital!"

ok, she didn't quite say it like that, but...OMG, now what?  i called my mom, hubs called his mom and then we started the tree.  i called my two besties ever who had i asked had to be at the birth with us and everyone was on their way.  it took my mom maybe 30 minutes at the most to get to my house and by this point, i could hardly talk, the contractions hurt sooooooooooo  bad and i just felt this urge to move around.  we gathered up all our stuff and headed to the hospital, it was maybe a 15 minute drive-which felt like forever...THANKFULLY it was in the middle of the night and no cars were on the road, but i was in some serious pain.  (my mom stayed at our house with kman (he was still fast asleep) until hubs' mom arrived to be with him)

by the time hubs dropped me off at the entrance to the emergency room, i felt like i might pass out.  obviously, they knew just by looking at me why i was there-but i could barely make it through 2 or 3 words and another contraction would start-SERIOUSLY, where are these every 2 minute jobs?  at triage i was 5cm (half way there) and literally screaming in pain.  my mom and my two bffs arrived as i was walking to my labor and delivery room and i was a hot mess!!! oh weeh...  all i know is it hurt and i was focused on two things (meeting my baby and when the heck might i be able to get that epidural?)
in the room now, feeling lots and lots of pressure, the nurses thought i might be ready to push (ok, the only thought going through my mind is "EPIDURAL".  i can't be ready to push yet because i haven't had my epidural)

ok, so a rather quick check revealed i was only 7 cm (pretty good considering i was 5cm -30 minutes ago) and i could still get the epidural-YES PLEASE!  i am not doing a very good job here or atleast i don't feel like i am, making it through the contractions.  i was really quite embarrassed that i wasn't able to manage the pain better...but i had no relief.  i would get through one contraction and the next one would start.  it had been like that for almost 2 hours at this point and i was a screaming, crying mess.

the girls and my mom waited outside while i got the epidural and they told me they could hear me screaming (i was-it wasn't groaning, it was flat out yelling) and they said eventually the noise, got softer and softer and then....ahhhhh  RELIEF!  THANK YOU!!!  (thankfully the floor of the hospital was empty-the full moon of the days before had brought tons of mommas and new babies-but tonight it was just me-doodle ended up being the only baby born at that hospital on may 2nd)

here i am after i recieved the epidural-a smile.  (i look horrible-bloated, no shower)

so, i would guess we made it to the hospital by 3:30am, i think by 4:00am  j & s arrived with my mom.  so a pretty eventful couple of hours considering i'd been asleep at 1:00am.  i am kind of glad i went to sleep when i did, because i really wasn't very tired.

i would guess around 6:00am they told me that the mid-wife would be working her way in and that i would be ready to start pushing. the baby had its head turned side ways and they were concerned that if the baby wasn't able to turn right then i might have to have a c-section.  i wasn't worried about having a c-section; but i thought how crappy-that my body did all of this "natural" stuff all on its own, it had worked so hard to get the baby ready to come and it was a waste.  in preparation for the c-section they had my doctor on back up...waiting for the call.  (this could really happen-oh my!)

the mid-wife arrived around 6:30am and we talked about what i would have to do to get the baby to turn; it really meant pushing hard enough to spiral the body, which i honestly had my doubts about doing.  my epidural was so new at this point, that i had NO feeling in my lower half at all. i felt NOTHING.  but we got ready...i had hubs on my right side, j on my left and my mom and s were pulled up in chairs like they were watching a ball game :)

i got into position and pushed as hard as i could.  ok, well...i did the motion of what i thought was right, but i couldn't feel anything-so when they all started cheering because they could see the head and that i did a great job-i honestly didn't feel like i could take any of the credit for that.  i didn't feel like i did anything.  in a total of 3 pushes our little boy arrived at 6:50am on the rainy morning of sunday may 2nd.  (no c-section required! the doctor later thanked me for not having to come in!)

(welcome dfm!)

now, i haven't talked about how EVERYONE including hubs thought for sure it was going to be a girl.  i really wasn't sure either way, but i guess because everyone else felt so strongly that a girl was on its way i started to think that way too.  we had two names for a girl and like 6 for a boy.  (insert walking out of the house, on the way to the hospital-me "we didn't pick out a boy name yet" hubs says "it doesn't matter, its going to be a girl")
so, when the midwife announced "its a boy!" we i was completely SHOCKED!  immediately everyone wanted to know what his name was going to be.  we didn't know.  "doodle" had been on our list of 6 and it was the first name that popped into my head.  i confirmed the choice with hubs and that's how we decided.  his middle name is in honor of my wonderful grandma f.
